As a product of the Enlightenment of the early 18th Century, the French salon was a pivotal institution, which provided a place for people to congregate for intellectual discourse.

The salonnières, or salon hosts, knew the power of small gatherings and the importance of sparking dialogue for social and intellectual growth. They understood how inviting others into a space — typically a home — adds intimacy, depth and more robust dialogue.
